We review power system advances poised to impact future medical design: new battery technologies, wireless power (charging), and new fuel gauge techniques. We then explain how these ground breaking technologies can transcend current consumer implementations and be incorporated into medical devices potentially enabling new advancements in medical products. Additionally, we consider the potential impact on agency certifications such as IEC 60601 and patient risk mitigation. Finally, we cover the design considerations, benefits, and tradeoffs in implementing these new technologies.
