In-Pack Charge Control

ICCNexergy's Patented Technology for Placing Charge Circuitry Inside the Battery Pack

By removing the charge circuitry from the host device, in-pack charge control frees up valuable component space and provides added protection against operating conditions that reduce battery life. Leveraging our patented VVT technology, we are also able to provide the industry’s highest levels of efficiency and lower concerns over heat levels that may arise from this configuration.

Working in conjunction with the safety circuitry, in-pack charge control is a secure and effective charging method that ensures proper charging conditions over the life of the battery pack. It places the voltage and current regulation, charge termination and safety mechanisms necessary for properly charging lithium-ion batteries inside the battery pack.

Similar to a desktop charger, in-pack charging tightly regulates the charge voltage to within 0.2% of the cell manufacturer’s specification. This ensures that the cell is never overcharged and provides maximum safety and excellent cycle life.

In-pack charge control limits the charge to a preset level (usually 0.7C) indicated by the manufacturer’s specification. Charging at the proper rate helps to maximize cycle life and reduces stress on the cell.

Charge Termination

The in-pack charge controller closely monitors the current delivered to the cell and terminates the charge at a predetermined minimum current level, typically C/20. Full termination of the charge current prevents float charging of the cell, which minimizes stress on the cell and maximizes the life of the battery pack.

Low Power Consumption

In-pack charge circuitry is designed to consume very little power, which extends the cycle life of the battery pack. Current consumption during the charge cycle is 200uA and less than 15uA during sleep mode.

Safety

In-pack charge circuitry utilizes a thermistor for temperature sensing and only enables charging when the battery is within a pre-determined temperature range. Additional on-board safety circuitry continually monitors the cell voltages and currents preventing charge or discharge when an unsafe condition is detected.
